If so, with who (ACK, NKC, CKC, etc). Also, what breed do you have and why did you choose this group to register with?

We're in the US. I'm just amazed at all the different groups I could register my dog with and am trying to figure out what the differences are, what the advantages are to each, that sort of thing.

Hey, thanks for all the great answers so far! And thanks for the heads-up on the CKC, I didn't know that. Also I should have mentioned that my dog is an American Bulldog, a breed not recognized by the AKC. But still, wicked good information :)Thanks a bunch!

I have 10 shelties and am registered with the AKC. We show in conformation, agility, obedience, rally, and herding. I choose AKC because that is where the dogs I bought were registered and because they have the most activities. I am thinking of going to UKC because AKC is teaming up with PETA on the PAWS legislation.

AKC also has a program for the purebreds that come from rescue. It is called an ILP number. You have to provide proof that your dog is spayed/neutered. You also have to have photos and a letter from 2 different professionals (vet, groomer, trainer, etc) that state that your dog is a specific breed. You can compete in all of the activities except conformation and breeding. This is so the border collie from rescue can be a champion in agility, etc. Some of the best performance dogs out there came from rescue and have ILP numbers. This can also be used if you have a CKC or other register dog and want to compete.

By CKC do you mean the Canadian Kennel Club (a legit registry), or the Continental Kennel Club (which would register a goat as a Great Dane if you paid them enough)?

"Registration" only means you know who the parents are. It doesn't say anything about the quality or health of the animal.

And if you're paying to get a dog who's been registered by the Continental KC, you need to ask the breeder why they "chose" not to register with the AKC. Odds are it's because they are not permitted to register with legitimate registries for whatever reason.

There's a reason that the Continental Kennel Club is nicknamed the "Con"KC.

The reason these alternate all-breed registries pop up is generally because the people founding them and registering in them don't qualify for the stronger testing and restrictions of the older, established registries, but they still want to get people to pay big bucks for a "registered" dog.

Yes, all of my purebreds are registered...AKC!!!! I will never register nor buy a dog under any other registry that allows Pekapoos, Cockapoos, and all other combination of mixed breeds to register with them....If I am going to pay $1100.00 for a Great Dane, he better be ALL Great Dane! Some groups, all you have to do is send in a photo of the dog, and POOF you have papers!

Most people don't like AKC because the group is so strict on the dogs it will register...I say GREAT!!! that is what they are there for...to keep the dogs looking like they are supposed to.

I have an AKC black Great Dane...just lost my AKC Rottweiler

I registered my yellow lab with AKC. I only did this to show the breeding line ended with him (he is neutered). my dogs Sire is a show dog and I didn't want to get contacted for breeding. I like the AKC because they are strict. There is nothing worse than buying a dog that suffers from hip displasia because his parents were over bred.

Yes all of my dogs are registered because I am a breeder. I have all kinds of dogs and they are registered through many different things. I have four pets one which is a mutt so he is the only one not registered, a weimeraner (registered through CKC) a Golden Lab (registered through ACK) and a pit bull (also registered through ACK).

Basically, although I am not a big fan of the AKC, all the others exist only to give puppymills a way to say that their dogs are "registered" when they wouldn't be otherwise. AKC is the only one that is considered legitimate by educated, ethical breeders. None of the others are considered to be reputable.

OF COURSE!!! AKC,OF COURSE!!! The ONLY reputable PUREBRED dog registry!!! Well,UKC for *some* breeds,sorta,maybe...coonhounds,at any rate.

The other are PURE SCAM/FAKE for those ywho UN-ABLE to comply w/AKC's STRICT policies!
As in JUNK made by crooks/pupfactories,MUTT-makers who NEED to DELUDE(defraud?) the GULLIBLE into thinking they're getting a "real dawg!..got papers & evr'thin'!"
I've been in *MY* breed since'71.

Nope. My dogs have always come from pounds and shelters, so they don't come with papers. One of them is a purebred but since he was a rescued stray, he can't be registered.
