Yes, the USA was a great nation. It still is in many respects, but we have turned our backs on God. We now seem to be a nation of pagans and idol worshippers.

Greatest in what way?
Richest? - No. The USA as a whole may have more money than any other country but it's average citizens are not wealthy by the standards of the developed world. Japanese citizens are the worlds wealthiest, followed by Irish citizens. US comes in 12th.
Best standard of living? - Not by a long shot. Has higher crime rates than any country in Western Europe. One of the developed world's most dysfunctional health systems.
Best democracy? - High level corruption in Washington on a scale unheard of in most advanced democracies. Many of the most powerful people in government are unelected. Free, yes it is. But so is every developed country (although many US citizens like to believe theirs is the only country where one can criticize the president without landing in jail).
And then there's foreign policy......
I honestly can't think of a single reason to call the USA the greatest country in the world.
I'm not anti-American, just anti-arrogant-Americans.

Used to be, but not any more thanks to a certain bumbling idiot in Washington by the name of Bush. He has dragged this country down to where its a laughingstock and made a lot of people ashamed to live in this once great nation. When the US falls, like the Roman Empire, there will be a turning point that people can look at and say, "that was when the decline began." With the US, it will be with the Bush administration. Its not too late to recover, but we need to elect responsible, intelligent leadership and that will begin by getting rid of a bunch of Bush's cronies in Congress this Fall. Then, by electing someone with more brains than a chimpanzee - oops, just insulted all the chimps - notably, Bush in 2008. Thank God, he can't run again!!!

It is still the greatest country in the world, though the edges are becoming a little frayed. Once we get a smart president, we will rise from this hole we are in.

No, it's not the greatest, and it never has been. And it won't survive 300 years. Still beat out by Greece and Rome at a minimum, and probably the British Empire too.

This answer isn't just for people in the U.S. We might not have so much conflict in the world if people were less concerned with being the "greatest" anything and more concerned with breing decent, caring people.
