Have you ever noticed that even though there are now positive gay and lesbian TV characters, none of them ever seem to be able to have a successful and happy relationship long term? What do you feel are the reasons this is never portrayed?

because the united states isnt willing to accept that gay and lesbians are possible of creating a healthy and long term relationship.

people seem to have gotten to a point where they accept that there are gay and lesbian people out there...but they havent been able to accept that these people have lives like everyone else and are capable of being in love and being happy and successful as a couple.

In all fairness gay couples on tv is relatively new. Most of the shows that utilize gay characters have it set up where their dates and relationships are the main focus of the show. If they were to settle into a long term relationship than story lines would get boring. And really if you look at Will & Grace and shows like that several of the background characters are in commited relationships, just not the main characters.

I have several theories on this.
People in general are still a little uncomfortable with the concept and don't want to see the natural progression of a long-term relationship
Sponsors don't want to offend and will pull funding for programing like that
On soaps, a happy couple is a couple without a storyline
Writers just don't know how to go far enough without going overboard

If you think about it, there aren't really any lasting straight relationships on TV either. America hates to see happy people. A cheating partner is always more entertaining. Sad but true.

The same reason there are no mixed faith, interracial, elderly or physically handicapped couples represented well on television. It's all a facade to pretend that only thin, functional, heterosexual couples exist in the world.

its a sly way to slip in the propaganda that while you may want to be a lesbian or a gay man, be prepared as you will be alone for the rest of your life. Thank you America and all you religious f***s!
