USA supports Israel because the decendants of the Americans are Jews that came from Europe. Thus, USA gives aid to Israel to fight its enemies.

Entrenched irrational hate. It reminds me of a couple of six year olds in the playground shouting "You go first."
The Cold War was largely fought by what were called proxy wars - low level conflicts in which the major powers gave aid and weaponry to respective sides in low level conflicts. In this one the USA is supporting Israel against Hizbollah, armed by Iran.
Another theory I heard tonight is that Hammas in Palestine was moving toward recognition of Israel. This does not suit some hardliner uslims, so they triggered this to stop that process.
There are any number of other possible theories. I jusdt wish they could sort the whole thing out, but 60 years of hate and fear is a huge hurdle to cross.

Over 50% of the American population are Jews, 50% of these probably vote. George Bush won't ignore that.
