***January 17-18, 1912 - On the Terra Nova Expedition, Scott finally reached the South Pole, where he and his crew would eventually die on the return journey

Robert Scott and his party of five reached the South Pole on the night of January 17/18, 1912 only to find that Norweigen explorer Roald Amundsen had first discovered the pole a month earlier.

Scott and all of his party died on the return trip.

He didn't. He died before getting there.
