If you find a new star and log it you get to name it. Most star catalogue are now based on a number system. And only the older(?) stars carry proper names, the rest being named by constellation and order of brightness.

But it is more of a fun gift than a real one, at least at "name a star" it is. If you really wanted to name a star after someone it would cost a heck of a lot more than $50.

The only ones that can LEGALY name them are NASA. All those sites out there that say pay us money and will name a star after you or someone is a scam. If you want to throw money away give it to me and I'll name any star out there after you.

You can purchase the name from a company, called International Star Registry (google that) and they will send you a certificate that locates the star within a constellation, and it will be the name you choose.
