I think it was Law & Order--and I think Jerry Stiller was the guy who was trying to shoot his wife, thought his shotgun was unloaded, and accidentally shot the jumper as he went past the window because the gun was loaded.

The more I think about it, the more I think it might have been L&O SVU because I feel like Richard Belzer was on there. I ask because someone sent me this story that allegedly is true and came from some police source.

Found it! Once I realized Belzer was in it, I searched Homicide:Life on the Street and found an episode called Shaggy Dog, City Goat that aired in Jan. 1998. It wasn't Jerry Stiller playing the old guy, it was Steve Allen. Thank you all for taking the time to try to help me with this!

Okay, I checked all the L&O (original) episodes and it was not Jerry Stiller -- the only episode he got a credit for was:

The Fertile Fields:
This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of the 1991 Crown Heights riots. Rabbi Schneerson, who was returning from a regular visit to his father-in-law's grave, was crossing through an intersection when it was hit by another car and veered out of control, striking and killing 7-year-old Guyanese youth Gavin Cato. For the next four days, there were numerous acts of violence were committed against Jewish citizens in the area, then there were four days of rioting by the African-American residents.

There are 371 episodes to choose from, so you can have LOTS of fun hunting for it, though!! Maybe someone else has a better memory of it. But I can't believe they actually made an episode out of it -- that is a classic example of what to classify a death -- murder or suicide -- as shown in the Snopes 1994 legend in 2nd link below.
