I tend to answer the phone a lot at work (the secretery no longer thinks this is her job) and I get screamed at by the clients of another worker in my office. If the person on the other end is nice, I will find the answer for them. If they scream at me, I put them straight to voicemail. Why is it that people seem to think that screaming gets me to work harder for them?

They don't....think I mean. They are angry and frustrated and just going with their emotions as they have been taught to do. How many talk shows and self help gurus have you heard lately say use your brain instead of your emotions. They actually say just the opposite. So thinking has gone out of style. Until it is brought back by those of us sick of this type behavior it won't get better. Sounds like you have the right idea, help those reasoning beings and let voice mail help the emotion addicts.

It doesn't help to scream at someone over the phone. I was very nice to a person who called me asking for a payment I had already made, and after about 5 minutes of talking, she finally gave up.

I think being nice helps a lot if I get screamed at for no reason I have a tendency to put people on terminal hold.

I wish more people would exhibit decent manners. Frustration is one thing, verbal abuse is another. I refuse to take verbal abuse either. Good for you!
