I had a friend that went through MSG (Marine Security Guard) training, he was an avionics technician. He described the training to me as something like the special forces would go through. They recieved extensive training in surveillance as well as body guard training. They also learned how to operate small arms weapons from all over the world, since there was really no telling what they might need to put their hands on.
ALso included was a great deal of terrorism awareness training, NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) warfare training.
All in all the training would be a mix of military boot camp, law enforcement and secret service all rolled into one.

The Marines you are talking about are what they call Security Forces. It is a seperate MOS, however has a prerequisite of 0300 ( Infantry ). It is a bit tougher, but more so, it has certain regulations. No visible tattoos in certain areas, no Page 11's ( write-ups ) and basically, good-conduct. Other duties of Security Forces other than Embassy Guards include: Presidential Security, Barracks Security, and Naval Security.
