From what I've read about nutrition 2,000 to 2,500 calories is the average daily value for adults. It could be more or less depending on his build.

That's a very hard question. There are so many variables.
Make sure to get all of the vitamins and minerals the body needs.
Once that need is fulfilled, then only worry about calories if there is a weight gain.
Our bodies are pretty stupid in one aspect: If we are lacking in some nutritional element, the only mechanism to get it is our body makes us hungry. Then most make the wrong choices and eat too much.
I will use myself as an example.
I am going to be 45 this year. I am 6'3" and a fit 220lbs(46-36-42). I do not go to the gym or regularly workout. My life is pretty busy though.
If you go by any standard chart, I should be getting around 2500 calories.
But, guess what?.....
My average intake is 6000 calories! If I drop below 4000 calories I will have a good weight loss that will make me prone to illness in less than 2 weeks.
I have had days where I had a light breakfast and skipped lunch or snacks. This has caused me to lose up to 7lbs in one day. I have to make up for this in the next 24hrs by major intake.
I eat about 5 - 6 times per day. My 6pm meal is usually measure in pounds (about 2-3lbs).
So..... Here is my best idea:
For 7 days measure the current daily intake and add it up then divide by 7 for a daily average.
If the object is to lose weight, then reduce the daily average by 10% - 20%. Always make sure to get a balanced diet with all the needed vitamins and minerals.

go to caloriesperhour.com and input what he does in a day (adding up to 24 hours), how tall he is and how much he weighs on the activity calculator, whatever number comes up that is the number of calories he burns in a day, and therefore the number of calories he needs to eat in a day to maintain his weight.
It'll probably be somewhere around 2000, make sure to include sleeping for 8-10 hours on the list\
here is the activity calculator
