DO NOT INDUCE YOUR OWN LABOR.
The old wives' tales either don't work, or are dangerous, or both.
A recent study proved that sex does NOT induce labor, and can, in fact, delay it. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have sex--if you've got the interest and the energy, go for it! But don't do it thinking it will put you into labor, because it won't.
Castor oil, on the other hand, is dangerous. It's a laxative. It will give you diarrhea. Diarrhea can cause dehydration, and dehydration can cause contractions. BRAXTON-HICKS contractions, not labor. Nice, huh? So now you're at the end of your pregnancy, you're ready to give birth, you're exhausted by non-productive contractions, and you have diarrhea and you're dehydrated... Just don't do it.
If your baby is ready, and your body is, too, walking might help, as might rocking in a rocking chair. Both use gentle pressure from the baby's head and gravity to help to thin your cervix.
But, as a previous poster wrote, nothing will work unless your body's ready anyway, and you might as well wait it out.

OK, now I'm not saying this will work for you, but I was almost the exact same as you at 39 weeks but four cm's dilated, and I did almost everything to have my baby (and she didn't want to come); First, I ate mexican food for dinner, got a pedicure (foot massage supposedly helps stimulates contractions) then I had sex with my husband a couple times. If you can somehow imagine you're having sex w/ Brad Pitt or Colin Farrell and are able to achieve orgasm, even better. Also, stimulating your nipples is said to increase your pitocin levels, so I was doing that too, as emberassing as it is to admit. After sex, I started walking around and sure enough, contractions started and I kept walking until they were strong enough to go the hospital. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT try the "mineral" oil or whatever that junk is. It just will give you nausea, vomitting and diarrhea. Good luck!!!!!

castor oil and such things may work, but . . . if that baby's not ready to come, nothing is going to work. All the websites will tell you the same thing. You pretty much have to be within 24 hours of natural labor anyway.
However . . . things that will not necessarily induce labor but bring you close to natural labor:
Foot massage, like one of those massaging foot baths
Red raspberry leaf tea
sex, obviously,
castor oil - a tablespoons mixed with ice cream of your choice, but . . . this can cause serious cramping.
Hope this helps,
Rebecca

No, and thats not safe either. Please just wait out the week that you have left. And enjoy it too, you'll be so tired once your baby is born you will have wished you had just one more week before the baby. Read a book, paint, draw, just be alone for the next week. And, if you really can't wait - like me. You could walk. My feet got HUGE but everytime I walked I got contractions. It also gave me something to do besides sit in the house.

drink 2 tablespoons of castor oil. It could take up to 6-8 hrs to work, but it really does. if it doesn't...well it's a laxative. Also sex works.
