The SQL Server has it's own backup routine that can backup to a file. Then you can use regular backup software to backup that SQL file. Or you can script a net stop mssqlserver and a net start mssqlserver and backup the raw database files.

For exchange, the Windows backup tool can do that just fine.

Programs such as BackupExec and ArcServe are probably the most popular, but you don't HAVE to use them unless you have several servers or are looking for more advanced backup features.

Since your asking this question, you can probably benefit from at least portions of my backup comment, which is in a web page here:

The secret to backups is not the media and software but the off-site storage and RETRIEVAL. After all. If you are using some piece of software and your servers get fried, how are you going to recover? You have to get the tapes which can take a day, reload a server. Reload the exact software that was used including version number in some cases. Then run the restore.
I have a friend that is the CTO of a company that will back your items (including SQL and Exchange) over encrypted internet or Point to Point T-1 lines to their storage facility. This way, let's say your office in Boston goes up in smoke. You can get the information copied to a server in Chicago and be up within a couple of hours. We use this solution with great success.

there are several good backup solutions. Computer Associates has a very good one. But no matter what brand you purchase you will have to purchase the SQL Server and Exchange Agents so that you can back them up. If you don't have the agent, you won't be able to backup open database files.

I've used veritas' back-up exec to back-up exchange and SQL databases with great success.

MS is okay, but if you want security and reliability; you may want to consider a Unix or Linux alternative. There are several programs out there like vinum or just simply setting up a crontab. It all depends on what OS your server is running on.
