Rats, like most mammals, give birth to young after an internal gestation. After 3 weeks (approximately 20-some days) they give birth to 6-12 pups. They do develop 'eggs', but unlike bird and reptiles, the egg doesn't develop a hard outer shell. The egg simply attaches itself to the inside of the uterus where it forms the embryo. In birds, the egg would gain a yolk, a 'white', an outer skin, then the shell itself.

No sweetheart, they give birth. Rats are mammals and mammals give birth to live offrings, although some mammals do lay eggs and example of which are platypuses and spiny ant eaters.
