Some people have gotten the answer half right. The flag, when worn on the right sleeve, has the union (the field of stars) at the top right. This is to show the flag as it would appear if it were on a flagpole with the wind coming from the right. This is to represent the forward motion of the soldier. The flag would only show the "right" way if the soldier was walking backward.

Flag patches worn on the left sleeve are configured in the commonly accepted "right" way.

Pescado534 is absolutely wrong. Flag upside down is a sign of distress - help needed or base taken...surrender is a white flag only. You NEVER use the American flag as a symbol of surrender.

The blue sector of the flag is always to be at the front of the flag on uniforms and vehicles etc.

There are 2 separate flag patches in the Army inventory, the normal US flaf replica that is worn on the left sleeve, and what is referred to as the "reversed field" flag patch, which is worn on the right sleeve.

It's supposed to look like it's flying or waving in the breeze or something.
I think someone just screwed up really bad when designing the patches and had to think of a good excuse...fast. Whoever they fed that line of BS to obviously thought it was a genius idea, and now, here we are!

The patches of the National Colors are worn with the blue field always facing front, because they are never to be in retreat.
When the patch is on the left shoulder, it is facing forward with the field in its proper place.
When it is on the right sleeve, it is facing forward with the blue on "backwards"

Because the blue background always has to be closest to the heart, just like the ribbons and medals that are worn. If there is more than one stripe and one of them is blue, it will be closest to the heart for loyalty.

A wood80 is incorrect... you only fly your flag upside down to surrender.
