As far as I know it's the only place that speaks like that. How did it start?

It is musical dialect is a combination of English, Spanish, Portuguese, African phrases and a good dose of Jamaican slang. Spoken in a sing-song style, the result is as exotic as any foreign language. Jamaican patois is a fascinating use of the language

Good question.. well in my opinion the accent evolved just like any other accent in another region of the world.. With the influence of the tribes around, of the English settlers, probably Spanish, the Americans later on or whatever else... Anyone that stayed there probably left their influence therefor that's what you have today in that region of the world: the Jamaican accent!

At a time many years ago, when there was conflict in Ireland and many Scots went to live there, many Irish went to live in the West Indies, especially Jamaica. You can still hear some of the Irish lilt in Jamaican English.

Remember the olden days, When the arawak people died of european diseases, they imported african and some native american to jamaica as slaves for their plantation.

They became jamaicans with their unique accent...

Have you noticed that Ghanean Secy Genl Coffee (Blue Mountain?) Annan has a similar accent. He drops his final g's.
He has a very pleasant way of speaking.

... dont really know.. but a few other islands , st vincent etc, are sounding close ....must have derived from the british plus pirate slang plus african accents all combined... thats pretty much the history
