To crazy nana: coincidentally that's what mexico said when the US took over the south west , but hey, the US saw a good opportunity in Mexico's civil war and having to figth the french and the spaniards at the same time, it was kinda now or never situation, (uncle sam doesn't miss a good deal).
And for the catering part, these immigrants do cater to us, most of the people working in construction, landscaping, restaurants (busboys and the like) and farming are immigrants they get paid minimum wage for these jobs and in most of these peoples salaries taxes are taken out by their employers, yet they get no type of reinbursement like the rest of us, I mean c'mon what "American" is willing to go pick peppers for 25 cents a bushel, and their labor is what is relatively the cost down in these industries so the rest of us can afford it. And for the record I do not condone illegal immigration, matter of fact, I'm kinda pissed off at the stress these people are putting on the social services system, but, dammit I give credit where credit's due.

As far as firefighters having to learn spanish, no did not hear any of that, I do know however that doctors offices and hospitals by federal law (as per a memo I received at work) have to provide interpretation or some form of reliable and acurate communication for patients that do not speak english, it does not matter what language they speak, it could be swahili, etc.

Of course that puts the heat on the hispanic community since after all we are the largest minority.

Actually something similar happened some time in the 19th century with the then large German immigrant community they were having problems with whole towns speaking almost strictly German, is very interesting piece of history I've got the article somewhere is my mess of papers, if you're interested I can email it to you.

hope this helps

As we will soon be a part of Mexico all government agencies in the US are learning Spanish. English will be a second language until it is phased out completely around 2015 by the Mexican government.

Well maybe Americans should learn to speak Arapaho or Inuit or Sioux? "English" is England's language, not America's!

Why is it that American's are so resistant to learning Spanish? Everyone outside of America (or ALMOST everyone) speaks at least two or three languages. Can Americans just not do that?

I'm sure it's true. The United States is having to cater to the illegals which I think should be outlawed. Let them cater to us. I want my land back.
