The fire was on February 23, 1943. 35 children loose their lives to fire in a Cavan orphanage. Verdict criticises the nuns.

Here's a book about the fire:
Children of the Poor Clares by Mavis Arnold and Heather Laskey

Paperback; 10 Euro / 12.50 USD / 7.00 UK; 160 pages [Add To Basket]

On Tuesday 23 February 1943 a fire broke out in a County Cavan orphanage run by the enclosed order of Poor Clare nuns, killing thirty-five children and an elderly woman. The horrific tragedy was widely covered by Irish newspapers and an inquiry was launched into how such a terrible thing could have happened. The reports findings stated that the loss of life occurred due to faulty directions being given, and an inadequate rescue and fire-fighting service. Many local people felt that the inquiry was a cover-up and that more lives would have been saved if the first reaction of the nuns hadnt been to avoid themselves or the girls being seen in their nightclothes. The tragedy led to questions as to how an enclosed order of nuns came to run an orphanage in the first place when few of them were more suited to the discipline of the religious life than the care of children. Here are the stories of some of the children who once lived in St Josephs Orphanage and what happened to them afterwards.

There's going to be a documentary on the fire:
