What's the best over-the-counter antidepressant mood-enhancer you can buy? I tried St. John's Wort ... couldn't tell that it did a thing.

Valerian or Kava Kava (from what I'm told. I never actually tried it). Check the health food store and definitely speak to a physician before trying anything. Also you may need to make adjustments to your diet. You may have a mineral deficiency, which gives an imbalance to your hormone levels. Exercise is great also.

You should also try writing a gratitude journal everyday. Try more than one thing. Do not rely solely on anti-depressants. I totally know what you're going through. Ultimately what helped me the most is prayer.

All the best to you.

There is a natural supplement called 5HTP which is a precursor for serotonin ( the "feel good" brain chemical). Since it is a precursor to serotonin your body will take what it needs and leave the rest. Many pharmacies sell 5HTP in there vitamin / herbal section. Check with your pharmacist about how much you should take. 5HTP is also great for treating insomnia as it naturally induces a restful sleep. Take it about 1+1/2 hours before you go to bed.
DO NOT take 5HTP if you are also taking a pharmaceutical antidepressant. You could have very serious side effects with this combination.
Also the herbal combination Rhodiola and Rhododendron is known to be very effective for depression. Rhodiola can also be taken by itself. These products can also be found in the vitamin / herbal section of most pharmacies.
Check with your pharmacist.
Good Luck.
