Depression is not a good thing, but it is a good sign. It means that some deeper part of your mind is waking up to the lies and contradictions that you have been fed your whole life. Search for the truth...oh, and DO see a doctor and tell him/her what you are feeling. Depression is serious and treatable.
(p.s. - I have been there, I know what you are going through)

Depression has MANY causes, most of which eventually come down to affecting your hormones and body chemicals. Sometimes it is caused by an illness or disease affecting another part of the body. Sometimes it's just plain being out of whack. Depression is often thought of as a chemical imbalance, but it can also be straight up old fashioned being depressed about something that has happened in your life. In either case, both therapy (counseling to express your emotions and move past them or behavior modification to change the way you think) and medication (to re-balance your body chemicals) can help.
Serotonin, Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, Dopamine, Estrogen, Testosterone are just some of the chemicals that can effect your mood. Most medications target these chemicals and increase the amount in your brain of the ones that make you happy. For example, an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) like Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa keeps your neurons from sucking serotonin back into their storage banks so there is more in your brain to be captured in the receptors that are used to pass messages around your neurons - in this case, the message that you are happy. Physical activity is also often "prescribed" as it increases the amount of epinephrine in your brain.
Others take different approaches with similar outcomes. Overcoming depression is often both a chemical and self healing process. You may take drugs that make you feel better, but spending enough time depressed will change the way you think about things, namely you have a more negative outlook on things. It is often helpful or necessary to also work on your thought processes.

Well there are different kinds. Bipolar is a chemical inbalance as is most of them. There is also post-partum. Bipolar needs to be treated with medication/theraphy as do most of the others.
