Once again we see mediocre performers from stage and screen receiving MBE`s OBE`s CBE`s and Knighthoods in the Queens Birthday Honours list.

Alan L, I agree with you 100%, for years the "honours"
system has appeared ridiculous to the ordinary British
people.I think that it all depends on how much you brown
nose the"right" people,o.k., one or two lesser people are given awards of one kind or another;this is just a sop for us peasants. There a lot of people out there doing ordinary jobs and serving the community who neither get or expect recognition,to all of them THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!

To be honest I view the honours system as an anachrositic throwback to the days when Britain invaded and pillaged the world with impunity, and gave birth to the slave trade and racism. But I also think that celebrities are a waste of space who exist to promote the dumbing down of the population and to distract them from the really important debates about social justice. Pity more famous people were not like Benjamin Zephania and turn down the "honour" because of what it stands for, particulalry regards the British Empires massacre and enslavement of millions of his ancestors in the past

Maybe all the best performers have already received awards.

I can't disagree with Robbie Coltrane on the 2006 list, but Sanjeev Bhaskar strikes me as more of an appeasing choice. I think he's very funny, but an O.B.E.?

These honours lists mean nothing nowadays.
They are handed out to footballers, presenters, news readers, tea ladies, all sorts. None of them have done anything really worthy of the award.

Well, I guess it's the Monarch that does it - in this case the Queen (I think), so she can do what she plaeses. I know Sir Paul McCartney is an MBE. So why not others too?

Doesn't really matter what you do, it's what people think you do, if you act, then they think what you do is you when it is really just acting, or something like that... Are they giving the award to the actor themself, or the imaginary role they play? All it does is devalue the award. If you do not have to really do the work the award is for, but only be able to impersonate people who do, why should your publicity be equal to other people's work?

The honours system was never created to reward personalities.
They have already been rewarded financially and by becoming well known.

Leave the honours system to reward those who tirelessly give of themselves without financial reward, without having sought recognition and are genuinely humbled by it when they do receive it.

What really fries me is that so many of the Hollywood types (I'm American) are granted publicity and stature far beyond their actual abilities. It's the marketplace, I guess.
