No. You want to play guitar, not piano.
You'll just end up HATING piano if you're forced to play it.

AND, you'll resent your dad for making you do something.

While it may seem like you can take both at the same time, it's definitly to your advantage to know the piano because you learn about scales and keys, which are vital in learning to play guitar through chord progressions and whatnot. If you concentrate on learning the ins and outs of piano, when you do get your guitar, you will have just that much more experience then other people starting without those skills. And to tell you the truth, if you want to give your dad a hard time ask him, 'can you ever really master the piano?' :-P

I'm a Dad & my son is going through the same thing. His Mom wants him to do piano first before proceeding any further. Piano will cover all the fundamental musical needs you will need for any other instrument. Why not try to comprimise with your father and agree to take piano for a specified time, then switch. In the meantime, you can save your money and visit the music store as often as you like to see your goal. Show your Dad you mean business and that you will follow through on your agreement. Once you've saved enough money, ask Dad if you can purchase the guitar if even to practice by yourself without giving up piano until you're finished with those lessons.

I don't think that you will really be able to "master" piano, I've been playing piano for about 5 years, and I still haven't mastered it. I think you should get pretty good, and then start guitar, I know a lot of people that are learning how to play two instruments at the same time, I think you could too, but you have to be confortable playing piano first. Good luck!

It is soo much easier to play the guitar after you've mastered the piano, but if you are paying for it, then I don't see the problem. Explain to your dad that in this case, mastering the piano does not mean playing Beethoven, it just means being able to recognize the notes and chords. Your lucky that you are going to get lessons for Free!!! Usually it costs alot!!

The Piano is a more prestigious and more rigorous instrument. That's what your dad is thinking. I say compromise. After three years of piano, tell him you will continue at the piano, while playing the guitar. Tell him thatt waiting till you master the piano is quite vague and you think that you're solid enough at it.

Parents are rough sometimes. I don't agree with your father's decision, but I do see where he is coming from. When I was younger, I took piano lessons and love it until everyone including my mother started making a big deal out of it. He just wants you to be the best. Talk to him some more.

Piano and guitar are pretty similar so I'd go for it. It'll make you a better guitarist to understand a variety of instruments.

Maybe because you have to master one instrument before you go to the next. I agree with him. He also already paid for your piano lesson. You should master the piano first, then you would be better on the guitar.
