Because they are crap!!! The only reason its popular is because everyone has to have what they see on TV and be cool carrying it around. There are much better portable music players than the IPOD. Creative and IRiver are a few that make much better devices.

if you're good to your iPod it'll be good to you.
in terms of apple products, they're generally a lot cooler and a lot more advanced than say microsoft products, but they're not as reliable. a shame really but that might change with the changes they're making.

it is planned obsolescence.
the battery inside is the problem. it is hard to replace by yourself. they will probably address that issue in the newer models.
but if you use it only a little (as opposed to every day), it will last longer.
