The U.S. Navy was created by an act of congress in 1775 and old ironsides in boston harbor was the first true warship and is currently the oldest active ship in the navy. It is still used for training the naval cadets. The U.S. Coast Guard was not founded until 1790. It was created to help combat against piracy along our coast lines and was initially under the department of commerce because its primart mission at the time was to protect the trade routes and trade ships. Incidentally the first ever naval action by our navy was against the british in 17775 when Gen. Benedict Arnold was leading a campaign to invade british controlled Canada. He captured Fort Ticonderoga and was stopped when he reached the great lakes; he had his men chop down trees and make small, fast little ships with 1 - 2 cannon that when somewhat larger british ships tried to engage them, our guys ran circles around the british.....
