Probably has been going on as long as there have been professional armies. it helps condition th new soldier to periods of interrupted sleep he or she may experience in the field because of guard or other night time duties. Hope this helps you out. Originally it was also probably to make sure fires and burning light sources in the camp or post did not cause a fire in the tents or buildings.

In basic training it is duel purpose.... first of all it keeps honest people honest... you are in a new location with people from all different walks of life that you don't really know.... and secondly it's for discipline and responsibility to do your duty.... It originated all the way back in the days to the Assyrian Empire, before the Romans and even before Alexander the Great.... when it really was fire watch... at that time soldiers slept in tents, you didn't want them to catch fire, it also kept wolves away and provided a means to ensure that the cooking fires kept burning.

Before there were modern facilities there were men who had to watch the fires and keep them going but mostly it was security for those sleeping. In modern times it is a tool to condition training personnel to take responsibility.

To train you for later and to test your perserverence and committment. Been a test of a soldier since the beginning of time. Everyone pulls watch unless they are higher ranking. They did theirs when they were starting out though.

We pulled at Ft Sill in 1971 in wooden barracks built during wwII. Dry as tinder...a small fire would have eliminated a sleeping platoon.

To train you to be able to stand watch either onboard a ship, or at a naval base or anywhere you may be stationed in the military. You learn the responsibility you have when you assume a post and you stand guard to protect your fellow servicemembers by properly standing your post.

In the 3rd Marine Division in the early sixties in Okinawa a fellow Marine that fell asleep while smoking in bed set his mattress on fire and received only minor burns thanks to the fire watch that was on duty, allot of the guys didn't patrol while on fire watch lucky for this smoker this one did.

It is for safety and to prepare you for guard duty later in your times in the Military. When it began? That is probably from the time of the minute men.
