There is this pristine island about 550 kilometers off the coast of Australia, northeast of Sydney. I understand tourism there is carefully regulated to limit overcrowding and destroying the fragile ecosystem. I would still like to visit the island and would appreciate information on lodging and recreation. Thanks.

I live in the US and am curious as to what Australia is like. Let's just take Sidney for starters. Is it cold in the winter? How do people live? Do people live mostly in houses with yards and property?, or is it mostly apartment buildings? Who is a major employer there? What percentage of taxes are taken from wages? What is the standard of living like compaired to the USA?

We live in US and I'm wondering if he carries a US bank debit card, will it work in NZ/Aus ATM's? Will a big fee be charged each time he uses it for currency conversion etc.?
I don't think carrying much cash is wise for him, since he'll be camping and staying at youth hostels etc. It seems like just withdrawing a bit at a time from his bank account would be best. Also he'll have a credit card for plane fares etc.
Thanks for your help!

It cost a lot of money to go to the Great Barrier Reef, and Australia in general, so I though I should do a cost-benefit analysis.
