What should I do on my trip to Australia?

I'm traveling to Australia for two weeks in a couple of weeks. What should I make sure to see? I can't rent a car, so I'm limited to things I can get to other ways. My first week will be spent in Sydney, the second is open. Thanks for answering!

I'm from the states and I was wondering if the tax rate on items is about the same, because I was just in Europe for awhile and was amazed at their high tax rates. So are Australian taxes closer to American taxes or closer to European?
