I will be moving to Japan to work next year and can request a location. I'm American, speak no Japanese, but want to get as much as possible out of the experience. I'm interested in learning the language and culture, but also want to be able to converse in English any locals that do speak it. I also favor a warmer climate, etc. beaches for surfing and whatnot. What are some locations I should look into to help answer my question? I'm open to any personal preferences, opinions, experiences. Thanks for the help.

...just because they're cute gals and I want to chat them up but the cigarettes they give away are always like some lousy menthol crap that I wouldn't smoke if I did smoke so that must be why the have to give them away and then my girlfriend asks me have a I taken up smoking because I smell like cigarettes and I can't say it's because a girl in a vinyl dress and go-go boots gave me free crappy cigarettes so I lie and say I was in a smokey mah-jong parlour because I'm secretly a brilliant mah-jong player and I win lots of money that way but she doesn't buy that but lets it drop and I think Basho had it right-"if you only live once, live in Japan"

I would like to do a lot of shopping and want to feel safe returning to my hotel room at night. I have heard of Myeondong and Dongdaemun for good deals. I would like to buy womens jeans, LV bags, cute jackets, and a few mens clothes. I also need to do christmas shopping for my 2 year old which means... TOYS! Please tell me if you know where I can find one of these cool I-Rivers I keep reading about. Oh, and bootleg DVDs are a must!

I have called various phone numbers in Bangkok before, but I am not having luck dialing a phone number for a hotel in Hua Hin. The number is listed on the hotel's website in this form:

+66 (032) 123456

I typically add a prefix to the number of 011. But I get a dialing error everytime I try it. Any ideas?
