from what i have seen, heard, read about the western world in general and the US in particular i guess it common for american ladies to smoke and to drink.

I hail from a south asian country where it is impossible to find any woman who smokes or drinks except in a few cosmopolitan pockets.

I just wanted to know if my understanding of american culture was correct. Please do let me know your opinions in this regard.

have a great day !!!

On August 6, 2001, Bush was given a security briefing entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike In U.S." Yet it would appear that either Bush did not read the briefing or did not take its contents seriously, as somehow 9/11 still managed to take place even in lieu of the briefing. To insure that the president is not making unwise/introverted decisions, congress is also given the power to make collective decisions based on the same intelligence that is presented to the president himself, and (congress) need only have the approval of the president for its decision to be affirmed. It was a similar situation when congress sought approval to present the 9/11 report to the american public. Based on the given facts, it would seem that congress should also have been given access to read the same security briefing that were presented to Bush on 8/6/01. Are you telling me that NOBODY read this briefing? And if it was read by congress why did congress not try to convince Bush of its accuracy?

Me and some of my friends, we are mostly 15 or 16, seem to be going out and drinking alot lately, we normally go into town and get wasted there, or in the parks or fields around (its a pretty small town), and there are police all over the place recently because they say that binge drinkin is high at the weekend, which is wierd ecasue we are the only ones realy there. My friends at school say that i should stop going becasue it is dangerous, and they are against smoking and drinking, and my friend who goes to the girls school gets the same from her friends (she says we're drinking buddies, where we just pass drinks around and take swigs from it). The hole nites r pretty hazy, nd av been told about realy crazy stuf we did, but luckly i dont get hung over. But are our frends at schule rite? Only they realy no about it, others at scule av no idea. do we have a problem or should we just limit ourselves rather than staying outside in public places on january nights, or are we fine?

It is no longer tolerable to speak your mind if it may in any way shape or form offend someone. ( I use the term offend very loosely because some people are offended by beliefs that are just not their own... ie. "under god" on your money )

here is a country that was formed on basic rights, you have people ( be it minorities, women, the whole united populace. that claim everyday they want equality, fairness, same privileges, similar treatment.
BUT if you treat these groups equally, with similar privileges, with similar treatment, you will no doubt be hit in the face with claims of racism, or unfair practices, yada yada

for holidays, he will say i am going to Africa (instead of naming the country he is going to). Or if there is a show on a certain region or country, they will refer to it as "Africa". Or people will ask you when you are in a foreign country "How is it in Africa?"... for godsake, the continent has 53 countries, several languages and different people, cultures, practices.. when i travel, i say i am going to France, UK or Canada , i do not say i am going to Europe, America... why can't people make the distinction and understand that Africa is not one single place, but a huge continent?

Not sure what to do. Keep the empty urn that used to contain my relative's ashes, or dispose of it? No feelings of attachment. How do you dispose of an urn? Does it need to have a cleansing ceremony? Head scratcher

I made no offensive comments... all I asked was why there was such an uproar about a private party that was held off campus.

I also simply asked why Yahoo makes a reference to drinking malt liquor as being racist, because by yahoo's own editorial, they specifically point this out... what does it matter what drink was consumed ? is drinking wine racist to Italians ?

why are people that did not go to the party offended by what may or may not have happened there ?

I'm English, I live in London and I'm SO EFFING SICK, of thick a-holes over here who think they're really 'right on' and cool by slagging of America and Americans.

I appreciate that the US has got a prik running the country but why it is SO CLEVER to be rude about Americans, does anyone else find this really tiresome?
I mean there's 300 million of them after all. I'm sure they didn't ALL vote to go to war in Iraq.

Sometimes its easier to forget who your real friends are....

Does it seem normal to you that an ailing horse receives postcards, religioud symbols and gifts totalling $1.2M, and makes front pages of major publications throughout the US of A, while at the same time our casualty count in Iraq or significant events at home serve as a backdrop, in small print, on the side of the Barbaro;s glam shots? When was the last time the public collected $1.2M to support a veteran who lost his legs? Do you think this is normal and if yes, please explain why? If it's not, why are we so sick?

I met my boyfriend when I was 18. We met the first day I was in college, because I joined the collegiate newspaper staff and he was already a member. We co-wrote lots of articles together and had all of our classes toegther (we were both journalism majors). We got to be good friends and both graduated. He worked in our college town and I moved away for a year. We kept in close contact and when I moved back we moved in together and have been having a live-in realtionship for 8 months now. I am kind of seeking a propsal now. We are in graduate school togther and I like the idea of a long engagement and the commitment factor. He had already said that he wants to be with me forever, but although it sonds kind of greedy, I want the symbolism of a proposal and a ring...although there is no need for a large ring. After living together/dating for 8mos and being friends with him for several years (5) is it too soon to get married, typically speaking?
