Let f(x) be a function defined on the positive integers such that:

f(x) = x/2 if x is even
f(x) = (3*x+1)/2 if x is odd

Then the conjecture is: iterates of f(x) will eventually reach 1 for any initial value of x.

Lester loves to mow the lawn. It has become a compulsion of his... in fact, he has one shed designated specifically for his lawn mower collection. Unfortunately, Lester's shed is not quite big enough, and 8 of his lawn mowers won't fit. So Lester increases the size of his shed by 50% and then has room for 8 more lawn mowers than the number he owns.

QUESTIONS: How many lawn mowers does Lester own?

10 people are around the table on the 50'th floor. 100 dollars are in the middle of the table, and they need to split it between them. The first one presents an offer - how much will each one get. They all vote; if the offer is accepted (at least half the people support it) -they go by that offer. Otherwise, they throw the person who has made the offer out of the window, and the person on his right makes the next offer. What offer should first person make to maximize his share and stay alive?
