Can someone explain to me how to determine the significant figures? And how to determine the sig. figs. in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I know that the rule for determining the sig. figs. is different in adding and subtracting than it is for multiplying and dividing, but can someone explain the method please.

Thank You.

An organic compound contains C, H, N, and O. Combustion of 0.1023 g of the compound in excess oxygen yielded 0.2766 g of CO2 and 0.0991 g of H2O. A sample of 0.4831 g of of the compound was analyzed for nitrogen by the Dumas method. At STP, 27.6 mL of dry N2 was obtained. In a third experiment the density of the compound as a gas was found to be 4.02 g/L at 127°C and 256 torr. What are the empirical formula and the molecular formula of the compound? (Type your answer using the format CO2 for CO2.)

My high school has majors and I'm in the Chemistry major and I want to design a T Shirt for us since it's senior year. I've already got the back side (says "CHEM ROCKS" using the periodic table boxes for each letter to pretend that all of them are elements.....) but I need something for the front.
The only one I could think of was "Lets mix fluids/liquids (don't know which one)" and have beakers and flasks mixing stuff on the front, but it might be too kinky for high school (though last year's Bio-med kids had "Let's play doctor... It's time for your physical...")
So any suggestions?

We have a review page for chemistry and it's got conversion problems on it, like 0.75kg to milligrams. I know how to do them by simply moving the decimal, but I checked my first answer and I think we have to do it mathematically. If I do it by just moving the decimal, don't I still get the same answer?? I am SO confused!!
......Ok. for 0.75 kilograms to milligrams, I moved the decimal to make it correct (I think). I have .00000075 but the answer says it should be 7.5x10^5 which means moving the decimal the OTHER way, I thought! So that would be 750,000. But it just doesn't make any sense!

Here's what she wrote:
.75kg x (10^6mg/1kg) = mg

Obviously, chemistry isn't one of my strengths...
If you can help, I would really appreciate it!!! :( I have a test tomorrow and I really don't want to fail.

Thanks.
