Andy was walking in the rain. The floor was so unstable, Andy slipped and fell.

Independent variable (cause) = the rain
Dependent variable (effect) = Andy slipped and fell

Is this right? Does an independent variable mean "cause"? Does a dependent variable mean "effect"?

vessel A was filled with enough air at 25 degree C to give a pressure of 50.0 torr. Vessel A has a volume of 675 ml. Vessel X, of Unknown volume, was connected to vessel A with a stopcock. Vessel X was empty initially (air had been evacuated), so its initial pressure was zero. The stopcock was opened allowing the air to expand at a constant temp and occupy both vessels. The final pressure for the entire system was 16.0 torr. What is the volume of vessel X? Please explain how you got an answer. thanks

(i cant figure out what i did wrong on this one.)

A)50.0 degrees C
B)15.0 degrees C
C)5.00 degrees C
D)4.00 degrees C

heres what i did:
q=mC(delta)T
1680=80(4.18)x
1680=334.4x
x=5.02...
so i put C, but that was wrong

using this diagram: http://i10.tinypic.com/440exxv.jpg

1) Base your answer on the particle diagrams. Samples A, B, and C contain molecules at STP.

Explain why the average kinetic energy of sample B is equal to the average kinetic energy of sample C.

and using the same diagram:

2) Base your answer on the particle diagrams. Samples A, B, and C contain molecules at STP.

Explain why sample C could represent a mixture of fluorine and hydrogen chloride.

if anyone could help that would be great! :)
