My neighbor works very long hours so I can understand why it might be hard for her to put more effort into raising her dog. However the dog is extremely unsocialized gets walked outside once maybe twice on a lucky day. He spends the rest of the day barking and pacing in the garage. I don't know much about the breed (shepard) but its very thin with defined ribs showing. The animal shelter says they can't do anything because she is feeding her dog, providing it shelter and water. How do I nicely go about telling her that she needs to provide better care for her dog?

I have had my betta fish for about two weeks, now. i change his water about every three days, and feed him every day, but he hasn't eaten in quite a few days, and he seems slower than usual.
He also sleeps a lot. Is this normal?
Thank you

This is the first time in a long time I've asked a question. A lot of people seem to think AKC papers mean their dog is perfect. Well please take the time to answer the following questions:
1.) True or False: breeders must produce excellent quality pups in order to get AKC papers.
2.) True or False: All AKC papers prove are that the animal you purchase is a purebred.
3.) True or False: When a responsible breeder looks for a good stud to mate her female with, all he/she looks for is a male registered with the AKC. After all--wouldn't the dog have to pass rigorous standards in order to obtain AKC papers?
4.) True or False: AKC papers are extremely expensive; only responsible, caring breeders would take the time to get them, because they must have a combination of money to spare and responsibility to get them. Backyard breeders would not have papers available because they are not responsible and won't shell out money to buy the papers.

10 points for whoever gets the most questions right.

I tried to adopt a kitten recently at the local humane society. After spending nearly half an hour filling out a 3-page application and another half hour looking over all the kittens, I approached the "adoption counselor" (sigh.....) and told her the one I was interested in. She took ONE look at the app and said "sorry you can't get a cat." What was the reason? I had written indoor/outdoor on the application! I explained that of course I would keep the kitten indoors for quite a while until he was old enough....and also that I would neuter him when he was old enough....but she just said, "no sorry you wrote on here he would be outdoors at some point."

The humane society is always saying they are looking for "good homes" for cats. It's not true. They are SO strict that many kittens like that one will not get adopted and will rot in that cage and cost the humane society time and money.

Does anyone have suggestions as to how I can help implement policy changes so cats DO find homes?

I finally figured out what is killing off my mollies... I had put in some other fish from a smaller tank, and didn't realize that it would cause a nitrite spike, so now I have nitrite readings off the chart. I have done about a 30% water change this morning, but the readings are still at least 2.0ppm but not as high as 5.0 (like it was reading before). So, is it harmful to the fish to do another partial water change right away, should I wait a few hours, or even a few days?

I want to dilute it some more, but I don't want to harm them any further. Any suggestions?

I am getting my 13 year old son a new kitten. We are HUGE fans of Harry Potter, fantasy and magick. We already have a male cat named Mystickal that is solid black. The new kitten will be a felmale tri-color (black, orange, and grey). Please help us choose a name for the new addition to our family. Thanks in advance.

Ok, so here's the story. I have a 3mo Rottweiler. She has just learned that she loves to play fetch with a tennis ball. The thing is, I will throw the ball across the room/yard and she's runs after it with all her might. But, when she's ready to bring it back she growls at me the whole way (not a mean growl, just a low pitched warning, i say). Anyhow, then when she reaches me she stops growling. She listens to my commands, drop it, sit, and then we go again and she growls again. Does anyone know why she does this or what it might be. She doesnt get mad when I tell her Drop it, and she never bites me during this game. I'm just worried it may get worse as she gets older. Any advice would be appreciated. And I don't hit her, so I don't want any answers like that please. Thanks again!!!!

I have two alge eaters. One is about 5 1/2 inches long and the other one isn't really growing. I'd say he's about 2 inches long. I got them at the same time. I have 2 10 gallon fish tanks so one went in each tank. The one that isn't growing is in with 5 other fish, cuz their's not room to growing much (fish grow accordingly to the space they have). The other alge eater, the 5 1/2 inch one, is in with 1 other small fish so thats why he's growing, he's all the space to grow. So what if I tranfer the small one into the big one's tank. Will he grow bigger? will the big one stop growing? will the big one eat the small one? I need some help here.

I used to take my kitty to an old country veterinarian. He'd just listened to the lungs, heart and palpate the abdomen. Everything okay - $30. Now that he's retired, I've started going to this new clinic with young vets. Take kitty in, wait 2 hours in reception area, taken in to exam room. Wait another hour. Vet comes in. Weights kitty, listens to heart and lungs, palpates abdomen, checks ears, checks for flea dirt, looks in mouth and under tail, takes rectal swab to check for parasites and draws blood for more tests. Now kitty, who seems perfectly healthy to I'm told needs: flea repellent, antibiotic solution for scratch on ear, some kind of medicine to put in ears for infection/mites, medicine for intestinal parasites, vaccinations for rabies, leukemia, distemper and feline enteritis. Gets teeth cleaned and claws trimmed. Bill now over $200. Is this the norm now or am I getting soaked by over-excessive and unnecessary tests and treatments?

I live in the country and there is this feral cat that has been hanging around my house for a few days. It's a male, not neutered so he is not very friendly. I have been just ignoring him, but I think he comes around because there is an overabundance of birds/squirrels for him to eat. I have not been feeding him or being friendly. I don't want to injure him, but I don't want him around. If I call animal control, they won't be able to catch him because there are woods all around my house. Does anyone have ideas on how to get rid of this pest?

I have a little silver kitten and I think a Chinese or Oriental inspired name would suit him perfectly. However, I want it to be easily recognizable, so no "real" Chinese names that mean something translated into English. An example of what I'm looking for would be "Ping" which is easy to say and is the character of a duck in the famous children's book - or something like "Jackie Chan" which again is not a formal Chinese name and is very recognizable. Any ideas?

Can anyone tell me some games you play with your dog inside the house? There are times when going out to play is just not an option (too hot, storming, too late at night, etc...). Something that uses a lot of energy on his part would be greatly appreciated. I have a year old black lab and for some reason he is completely uninterested in ball playing outside today (it is really hot out and playing in his pool, while fun, does not take up a lot of his energy.) Any advice would be appreciated. I finally got him interested in playing with his squeeky ball, but ideas would be great for those other days when circumstances make it difficult to be outside.

My pup came to me with kennel cough. We have been to the vet many times. the cough seems to go away after taking all her antibiotics and cough meds, but when they are all done it seems to come back. I dont know what more to do for her the doc must think im crazy because every time she goes to the vet she is never coughing. The vet even messes around with her throat and the vet never gets a response out of my pup, she eats and drinks good and has not lost any weight. My pup normaly coughs at night and during rough play with the other animals. She is a pug and cockerspainel mix. please help!!!!

My cat has always been an indoor cat. She's 3 years old. The neighbors let their cat go outside. My cat was laying by the screen door looking outside and the neighbors cat came up to her and started meowing. My cat started meowing and now she's breathing really hard and is staring at him (he's laying on the patio near the screen). She's flapping her tail really hard. Is she scared? She keeps standing her paws up on the screen and meowing at him. Should I make him go away or are they just being friends?

Bella was spayed when she was 2 months old and Tiger (the neighbors cat) is neutered.
