A question for all the foodies out there...

I am a quite decent cook, and I just found out that my girlfiend loves French Onion soup (which I make a very nice version of). I'd love to make it for a special evening for her, however, I'm curious about what sorts of other dishes to pair it with. I'm, sadly, a student on a pretty limited budget, and I live in England, which means some ingredients typical to Americans aren't available here.

The best answer will be one that pairs well with the dish, is not terribly expensive, and whose ingredients I can get in the UK. Bonus points if you attach or link to a good recipe.

Thanks!

It's also very dark.
When it was hot I strained some of the liquid out as there seemed too much.
I had tested the jam in the usual way to check if it was ready -- it was.

The hand was made on Carol Duvall show, it was a rubber glove filled with something, I believe it was plaster of paris. The glove was fitted around a serving bowl and allowed to dry. I think the rubber glove and removed and the hand was painted and used to hold a serving bowl on a buffet or table for centerpiece. It was painted before being used and looked like a reat hand holding a serving bowl. I know I saw this on HGTV Carol Duvall show but can't remember for sure when it was. Maybe 6 months or so.

I tried putting them out in sun on a table, in a box with newspaper in the house, and they aren't turning red fast enough. Any suggestions?

I never want a big meal because it makes me feel bloated. And I never want anything that takes a long time to make because I don't have time. Also don't want anything with garlic in as it gives me smelly breath.

However, don't want something to light because otherwise get too drunk too quickly.

What do other people eat before a big night out?

It's almost as good as the wings you get at the restaurant, without the crowds and oversized breasts.
