I have always had my taxes done by Block (Federal only). I have nothing complicated just w-2's, yet we pay over $170 each time! I was considering filing my own taxes online using Block's Taxcut because it is only $39.95. But I wanted to know if it also does the computations for earned income credit and the child tax credit, and can you still send it directly to the IRS? Will I still be able to have my refund direct deposited into my bank account? Does it take about the same amount of time to get my refund (9-14 days)? and lastly, Is it safe? If anyone has used this online service I would appreciate any info.

My brother and I bought back in 1999 and are thinking of selling the house in a couple of years. Right now I'm the only one living in the house while my brother's permanent residence is somewhere else. What happens to the profit when we sell the house? Usually you have to have the house as your permanent residence for two years or else get taxed big time.

if you are going to have two W2's,then does it required both of them to file your tax return. OR the w2 which has year end deduction details would be enough to file tax return.

I have been fighting with the IRS for a couple for a couple of years about my 2001 return. I finaly figured out that an employer that I worked for in 1998 claimed he paid me $7,223.00 in 2001. This has been the root of my problem and it took me this long to figure it out. After many many hours and waiting on hold today. After speaking with 6 different agents at the IRS it comes down to this. He (former employer) has to file a 1099-c form and release me from the said debt. This makes me nuts. Where is the 1099 employer F'd up form. He is releasing me from debt that I never had?????????? I didn't make a mistake he did. On top of this I have no way of knowing if he will file the form inside of the 4 month window (extension) that I received from the IRS today. If he doesn't this all comes down on me...again...with more interest and late fees. Is there any other forms that I could get that will make the former employer expedite his correction of his filing??. Can the S.S. adminstration help

My parents claim me as a dependent. My earnings for the year are from my WORK-STUDY job -- $1850. I am looking at "Chart B - For Children and Other Dependents" on the IRS 1040EZ Instructions page http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040ez.pdf.

It says I must file a return if ANY of the following apply:
--- my UNEARNED INCOME was over 850
--- my EARNED INCOME was over 5150
--- my GROSS INCOME was more than the LARGER of
-------------$850, or
-------------my earned income (up to 4850) plus $300

My only income for the year was the money I received from my work study job and that was only 1850. I don't have any unearned income.

I don't think I have to file a return but I was hoping I could get some help from people who are more sure of this matter.

Basically, I am a single, 19 year old college student, claimed as a dependent by my parents, without any dependents to claim of my own, and I have $1850 from my work-study job in 2006 as my only earnings.

I was wondering what could happen when I claim 10 all year (and withhold $80 per month additional)? I do not have 10 dependant's, in fact I have don't have any. However, I file and pay what I owe every year. Is this fraud even though I pay it back?

I have always prepared mine and wifees taxes as a joint return and it was always easy cause we took standard deduction and did not itemize.....But last year I changed jobs and emptied out my 401k that I had with that employer. Now I know I have to report this somehow...just seems very confusing and I don't want the IRS breathing down my neck if I screw it up. Any thoughts???

Tough question. Here are the details. I am the custodial parent. Due to Divorce papers my ex-wife gets to claim her for 2006. Also, She has two other children that she will claim as dependents this year. My ex-wife only made 25000 gross in 2006. Claiming my daughter would have no affect on her taxes. So I asked her if I can claim her since she will not receive any benefit. Of course the answer was no. SHOULD I CLAIM HER ANYWAYS? On top of all of this I only receive $50 a month in Child Support and pay for all of the daycare expenses. Would the IRS come down hard on me if we both claimed her even though she received no benefit from doing so?
