I'd like to go about filing taxes on my own and avoid paying $50-$80 to have some chump at some tax place do it for me. My W2 states that $263.26 is the federal amount withheld and $148.86 is the state amount withheld. I earned near $5k working a part time job, so to my understanding I should recieve the total amount of both federal and state back. I will be filing as an idependent in IL.

Anyways, what's the best way for me to go about filing my federal and state at the lowest cost possible to me? Any good websites or programs I need to know about? All tips will help.

Thanks!

I paid my 2006 property taxes in January 2007 when they were due. I'm assuming I can't claim them on my 2006 return. Is this correct? Also, if I pay my 2007 taxes in December of 2007, will that effectively double my property tax amount on my 2007 tax return?

I had several CDs at the bank. I cancelled some of them to help buy my house. Say the CDs earned $200 in interest over the year, but I only walked away with $150 in interest due to $50 in penalties. On the 1040, do I report $200 in earned interest or $150?

My friend has been living with me for a year in my house and hasn't been able to find a job yet. He isn't related to me either. He is 21 years old and has no income. H&R block says I can list him as a dependent because he: an individual (other than your spouse) who was a member of your household all year will be considered a qualifying relative so long as the relationship does not violate local law, and has no income. Is this true? Do I get any tax credit for him or is it just a deduction. I made less than $20,000. Thanks.
