I am looking for fiction which is set in the first half of Nineteenth Century America (1800-1850). I would like it to be as "historically accurate" as possible. Does anyone have any recommendations? Does anyone know of any authors who specialize in this period of time? Are there any famous novels about this period of time?

The Night Has a Thousand Eyes by Frances WIlliam Bourdillon

The night has a thousand eyes,
And the day but one;
Yet the light of the bright world dies
With the dying sun.
The mind has a thousand eyes,
And the heart but one;
Yet the light of a whole life dies
When love is done.

I have read the book and have a fair idea as to what the formula is. But I want certain suggestions as to what you guys think the formula is!
If any of you have read the book and believe that you almost know the formula then guess what, you can mail me on and maybe we can discuss it out. (You know, the mastermind concept!!!)

I coudn't read it because the Ameican terminology did not ring true for English characters. I never heard an English child call his mother "Mom"; it's usually "Mum" or "Mummy". There were numerous examples like this. Did I get a version adapted for American readers?

I am ready to start writing and illustrating children's stories that I intend to try to get published, but I want to know what format publishing companies want or prefer. For example, should I type up the story in a word processing program and have the pictures separate? Should I do them on the same paper or have them separate, but matched so they line up right myself or do they prefer to do all the layout? I would also appreciate any advice from experienced writers, early childhood educators, or anyone who works in publishing.
