As a novelist, the correct usage of grammar in my prose is essential. Although the usage of grammar is a little confusing, I still enjoy studying and practicing them. I wouldn't be able to complete my novel if it weren't for the help of technical English.
I find it weird when my budding novelist told me that he doesn't like grammar. (Perhaps that's the reason why his work is always in a mess.) He seems to enjoy writing, but his style of writing is always incoherent.
Shouldn't grammar be the most important factor when writing fiction?

I'm asking for a list of objects or things. Please don't say people, that's not the kind of answer I'm looking for. I'll start.

Coal
Onyx
Oil
Tar

Kinda get the drift? I'm looking to plump up the book I'm writing with descriptives, and I need more words to describe black.

Mine would have to be Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. We know so much about Elizabeth and her opinions, but the book hardly touches on what Darcy feels! I would enjoy knowing exactly when he knew he LOVED Lizzy, if he ever thought of giving up, how he achieved the whole Lydia episode, and especially what he felt of Lizzy asserting her opinion on Bingley and Wickham so easily during her first proposal. And I would very much like to see if he would have issues with a clever wife. Obviously he loves her, but would it be annoying to have 2 such strong characters around? And I would like to see what he and Lizzy look like. What would be your choice and why? This should be amusing.... ;)

A boy and a girl,
the best of friends.
From elementary to high school
from beginning to end.

Through all those years
their friendship grew.
They both felt the same,
but neither knew.

Each waking moment
since the day they met.
They both loved each other
sunrise to sunset.

He was all she had
in her terrible life.
He was the one
who kept her from her knife.

She was his angel,
she made him smile.
Though life threw him curves,
she made it all worth while.

Then one day
things went terribly wrong.
The next few weeks
were like a very sad song.

He made her jealous
on purpose he tried.
When the girl asked, "Do you love her?"
on purpose he lied.

He played with jealousy
like it was a game.
Little did he know
Things would never be the same.

His plan was working
but he had no clue.
How wrong things would go,
the damage he would do.

One night she broke down,
feeling very alone.
Just her and the blade,
no one else at home.

She dialed his number,
he answered, "Hello"
She told him she loved him
and hung up the phone.

He raced to her house
just a minute too late.
Found her lying in blood,
her heart had no rate.

Beside her was a note,
in it her confession.
Her love for this boy,
her only obsession.

As he read the note,
he knelt down and cried.
Grabbed her knife,
that night they both died.

She was found in his arms,
both of them dead.
Under her note
his handwriting said:

"I loved her so,
she never knew.
All this time
I loved her too."

I Do Not Love You...
I do not love you as if you were salt rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers; thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hands
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

-Pablo Neruda

Its so simple and sweet.

I know the rules for standard diolgue punctuation, but if a character is thinking speech in an inner monologue, how is that punctuated? Should it go within quotations, or does it merely get written in italics?

Serious answers only, please. All others will be reported for point farming. Thanks.
