I found _Tristram Shandy_ collecting dust in the corner. It was one of those books which I just could not get past the first few pages. With all due respect to Sterne, I never want to deal with that book ever again. Apart from _Tristram_, are there any books out there that you absolutely couldn't finish? Just curious!

I remember reading this book in elementary school, it was a diary of this girl whose father was a soldier but he had died, and the diary was about how she didn't like her mother's new boyfriend, and having to go to a new school and I remember one of the entries was talking about her writing the school newspaper. It was a very good book, and I would love to try to find it. Also, there's another book which precedes the one that I am looking for, which shows the main character younger, and it shows her dad in it more, if that helps at all. Thank you!

This story is about a teen age girl who witnesses the shooting of her mother, and is forced to shoot her mother's murderer, to save her own life. She then has to move from L.A to England to live with her only living relative, her 60 year old grandmother who she never met. Also living there is her cousin, who is the same age and who is completly different from the main character. They fight and play tricks on each other, but are forced to work together to save their grandmother's house, since she cannot afford to keep it much longer.

Should a poet or novelist read a lot, to help his/her own skills and style - or should he/she avoid books and poems so as to preserve his/her own style?

I'm writing a new chapter about a young girl who just finds out that she is an activated Vampire Slayer after watching her parents ripped apart by werewolves. She has the strength to get the job done, but is so grief stricken that she really wants to die by taking out as many of them as she can.

I'm trying my hand at writing a non-fiction novel of a technical nature. I used to be a relatively good writer, but years of writing project proposals and such in corporate america have negatively impacted my writing abilities. I'm trying to write on topics of a technical nature, but when I go back to read my writing and explanations, it all feels very stiff. What can I do to give my writing more of a fluid, lively feel, even when writing about technical topics? Any suggestions to help me improve and get over this?
