They are almost as untrustworthy as Horoscopes.
If we had a book full of predictions for the coming thousand years, would it not be possible that some nut job that wants to be famous might read these predictions and decide that they will fulfill one so that they can go down in history as Prophecy #28? It's not like prophecies come in sealed envelopes that can't be opened until 2 years after they happen. Don't you think a deranged psycho like Son of Sam or Charles Manson or Adolph Hitler could be capable of such a display of Grotesque Artwork?
Something else I've noticed is that people are always trying to associate every single major traumatic event with an occurrence in the Book of Revelations. The Civil War, The Holocaust, 9/11, The Cold War, Hurricane Katrina. You name it. There was, however, no mention in the Book of Revelations about Tiananmen Square, though.
